dead at 70 Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister has reportedly died at the age of 70. As of press time, the cause of death is unknown. We get the news via Eddie Trunk, who tweeted, “Sorry to report that I have confirmed Lemmy @myMotorhead has passed away just now at the age of 70. RIP to a true original icon of rock.” Shortly thereafter, he wrote that Motorhead will make an official statement “tomorrow if not sooner on Lemmy’s passing. They will reveal details they want to then.”Lemmy had been hit by numerous health issues over the past few years, most recently this summer, when a lung infection forced six shows to either be curtailed shortly after taking the stage or canceled outright. In 2013, he suffered a hematoma and had been fitted with a defibrilator to correct heart problems. Throughout all his scares, he maintained his sense of humor, saying “Apparently, I am still indestructible” back in August.Born Ian Fraser Kilmister in Stoke-on-Trent, England, on Dec. 24, 1945, Lemmy joined Hawkwind as a bassist in 1972. He played on four albums, including Doremi Fasol Latido and Space Ritual, before being fired in 1975 after being arrested for drug possession while on tour.Shortly thereafter, he formed Motorhead and, after a slow start, they found an audience, culminating with 1980’s classic Ace of Spades. Their no-nonsense approach to rock n’ roll allowed them to bridge the gap between both metal and punk worlds, and they were a tremendous influence on many bands, most notably Metallica. Despite several lineup changes, they remained a viable recording and touring outfit, releasing 22 studio albums, with this summer’s Bad Magic being the most recent.
